A pair of magnificent pheasants sweep across this substantial stoneware canister, rendered in layered crimson, deep green, warm taupe, ochre and brown with extraordinary feather detail against a softly mottled cream ground. The decoration recalls vintage wares associated with both Robert Gordon and Liverpool Road Pottery of Stoke-on-Trent — an almost identical composition appears on documented Liverpool Road Pottery pieces — but this canister is unsigned, so we have left the maker unattributed.
