Antique Taunton Silver Plate Co. Triple-Plate Teapot No. 791, c. 1870s

Made in Taunton, Massachusetts during the height of New England's 19th-century silver industry, this remarkable Victorian teapot is a surviving piece of the city once known as the Silver City — the kind of object that was carried into a dining room on a tray, steam rising from its spout, and brought out again for holidays and family gatherings as decades became generations.

The underside bears the Taunton Silver Plate Co. maker's mark, No. 791 and "Triple Plate." The company's history and mark place this piece in the 1870s, making it roughly 150 years old. Its elaborate botanical engraving, architectural feet, sculptural handle and elongated spout capture the ornament and craftsmanship of the Victorian table, and the silver has since softened into a beautifully mottled patina.
